Most of the advice on these pages is relevant to both teenagers and young adults, but we have added some additional resources specifically for young adults. Parenting teenagers: what's normal?

Parenting teenagers has never been easy and each generation of parents faces new challenges. It's natural to experience mood swings as an adolescent but many teenagers are now experiencing higher levels of anxiety and self-harm than ever before. Some young people are also having problems with social media and bullying, eating disorders, exam pressure or poor sleep. 
As a parent, it can be difficult to know what's normal and when you should worry. The websites and books in the "general" section below are really good at helping parents understand what's going on in their teenager's brains, how to communicate effectively and where to look for help and reliable information. In each section we've also included some websites and books for young people themselves.

General websites and videos

  • Mindmate
    This is a website based in Leeds but they have lots of general resources including an excellent section for teenagers and parents of teenagers. The section 'My amazing brain' explains more about what's going on in the developing brain. Practical and easy to read e.g 'Your teenagers behaviour towards you isn't personal; the ability to think rationally, make good judgements and feel empathy is lowered during adolescence'  Find out more here

  • Blame My Brain: the Amazing Teenage Brain Revealed
    by Nicola Morgan. This gives a really good insight into why teenagers struggle with many issues and gives tips about how parents can help. "It's funny as well as interesting and will completely change the way you deal with situations" (Parent)

  • How to Talk so Teens will Listen and Listen so Teens Will Talk 
    by Adele Faber. Highly recommended- practical, full of examples and illustrations. Available Here.
  • Get Out Of My Life …But First Take Me and Alex Into Town
    by Tony Wolf and Suzanne Franks. Funny, practical and insightful. 
    I can now see that some of my son's rejection of me is as a very natural part of his development - he needs to be able to separate and become independent. This book explains that this is quite confusing for teenagers too which explains why my son can be so loving one minute and dismissive and rude the next! " (Parent) Available Here.

Books for teenagers and young people 

  • Shelf Help
    A selection of books available in your local library which have all been chosen and recommended by professionals and young people on a range of mental health and wellbeing topics. Some books are self-help manuals or workbooks, and others are fiction. You can check the list on-line and read the first chapter to see if you like the look of it, then borrow it from your library. Books from Shelf Help that we have included in this website are marked with a star * 
  • For example: Mind Your Head* by Juno Dawson is an award-winning book for young people which discusses stress, anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia, self-harm, divorce, OCD, personality disorders and addiction with lots of pictures, diagrams and stories. To the point and never patronising.
